After the establishment of Biswanath College in 1960 with the faculty of Arts there still remains an increasing public demand for introducing science stream in this institution of higher studies. The demand was justified by the fact that there was no such institution of science education for desiring students of the entire part of Bharali river of Tezpur Sub-Division of the then undivided Darrang dist. As the result of this genuine demand, college started the science faculty in 1970 with Pre-University course offering Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany + Zoology) and Mathematics as combination. Science section was formally inaugurated on November 28 1970 by M.M. Choudhury the then Chief Minister of Assam. With the introduction of science faculty the department of Statistics came in to existence. The college started degree course in science in1976-77. the degree course in Statistics started in the year 1994. Present teaching staff: 1. Simanta Hazarika, M.Sc., (1997- ) HoD 2. (1998 - ) Laboratory staff: Tankeswar Hazarika Mission--------- the mission of the department is to impart statistics education with a view to spreading scientific and numerical temper among students. Goal----- the goal of the department is to develop man power resources through training in the theoretical and experimental aspects of statistics, which is expected to help the country’s economic progress through employment and research in various field of activity concerning statistics. Vision : the department has vision for: Introducing computer course/electronics as vocational course Expanding the knowledge of statistics by organizing popular talks, demonstrations, exhibition, etc. on subject related to statistics. Academic activity: The department has been trying to achieve the goal of performing the following activities: - Holding of theory and practical classes regularly for the students having general in the degree course. - Periodic evaluation of students by holding class test by the department apart from those done by the college. - Organizations of seminars and popular talks on various statistic related topics from time to time. Other relevant activities: - most of the teachers of the department are the life members of local branch of Assam Science Society and they participate actively in the various programmes aimed at popularizing science among the masses of the locality. - The teachers and students of the department take active part in organizing survey of local organizations, particularly in rural areas - Keeping pace with the sector reform pilot project, Rajiv Gandhi National drinking water mission, the teacher and the students take active part in organizing survey in the purity of drinking water in sonitpur dist.
