After the establishment of Biswanath College in 1960 with the faculty of Arts, there still remains an increasing public demand for introducing science stream in this institution of higher learning. The demand was justified by the fact that there was no such institution of science education for the desiring students of the entire eastern part of the Bharali river of Tezpur Sub-Division of the then undivided Darrang district. As the result of this genuine demant, the college started the science faculty in 1970 with Pre-University course offering Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology) and Mathematics as combination. M.M. Choudhury, the then Chief Minister of Assam formally inaugurated the science-section on November, 28, 1970.

With the introduction of Science faculty, the department of Physics came into existence. College started Degree course in science 1976-77. The degree course in Physics (pass course) was started in the year 1976-77. Honours course in Physics was introduced in 1984-85. At present students can pursue both Major (Honours) and General (Pass) courses in Physics.
