he department of philosophy of Biswanath College was started alongwith the establishment of the College in 1060. At the beginning it was a one-man department late L.C. Borah was the founding lecturer of the department. In 1968 Late C.K. Sarmah joined as a lecturer in the department. Sri D. Phukan, the present Head of the department, joined in 1986. At present there are two lecturers and one post is lying vacant subsequent to the retirement of Late C.K. Sarmah. Till date, nearly 1000 students passed B.A. with philosophy as one of the elective subjects. Major course was started in the department on 15-07-2001. In absence of the government sanction, the department is yet to be equipped with two more teachers.
Mission, vision and goal:
Philosophy is the science of knowledge and wisdom. The mission of our department is to impart lessons so as to enable the students acquire pure knowledge and wisdom. And this being done, the students will be able to discover the truth, proper thinking and distinct vision.
Philosophy helps the learners to understand clearly the subject-matter of other branches of studies. It clears up the road of science. Philosophy provides information for scientific discoveries. Deep knowledge is essential for day to day activities. So it is an important objective as well as goal of philosophy to give lesson to the students to acquire knowledge and find out the truth to make the society a perfect one. Philosophy provides knowledge and truth about the mystery of life, nature, soul, Almighty and the universe through reasoning, facts and figures, imagination, emotion, and faith etc. At present Philosophy tries to analyze the language used in our ordinary and scientific world.
So, by teaching Philosophy, attempt is made to provide all these matters to students so that in future they may be competent citizens of society with a specific view of making an ideal society and country as well. It may also channelize the sense of virtue among the students.
