The department of Nepali was started in August, 1992 with 76 students in response to the demands from a large number of students of the college and different Nepali Organizations of Biswanath Sub-Division. The then GB of the college resolved unanimously to start the course in graduate level from the session 1991-92, and subsequently the university of Gauhati was appealed to affiliate the subject as MIL course in Arts Stream. The University accorded permission in the session 1993-94 and 1994-95 for introducing the course for the first year and second year students respectively. The temporary affiliation up to TDC second year was accorded in 1994. Soon after this, Govt. concurrence was obtained in 1994. Arun Upadhaya MA, M.Phil. joined the department on October 23rd, 1992 as lecturer. Mr. Upadhaya had to be the loan teacher in the department till the appointment of Hem Kumar Gautam M.A, in January – 1995 in a non-sanctioned post whose appointment was necessitate by the increasing number of classes. The department started teaching Nepali as MIL subject in HS (Arts and Science) level from session 1992-93.
The department’s main objective in HS level is to impart a fair knowledge of Nepali language and literature to students. It is also hoped that some of the students will find Nepali language and literature interesting and worthy of study. Such students will continue to study Nepali literature as an MIL in graduate level. In graduate level, Arts students are trained up in Nepali language and literature so as to enable them to have a fair knowledge of Nepali language and literature. It is hoped that at the end of the course some of them will take up such professions, as Nepali language teachers in various schools and colleges and other Govt. jobs. The future plan of the department is to introduce Major course. But at a time, when the college is experiencing acute financial problems and the govt. is not willing to sanction the second post of the department, it is a matter of great concern whether such a plan would be materialized. Anyway, the department will continue to work hard to impart quality education to the under-graduate students keeping the dream alive to start major course. The department will strive, but not yield.
OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT:In addition to normal teaching activities, other departmental activities include seminars, discussions and literacy competitions like recitation, creative writing, etc. The get-together of the students and the teachers is also very interesting and enlightening activity of the department.
