Established on 17th September, 1960 with Sri B.C. Chutia as its founder lecturer, Smti. Roma Kargupta joined the Department next. On introduction of major course in 1970. Late Mohidhar Borah and Me. Mehtab Uddin Ahmed joined the department in 1970 and 1972 respectively. Dr. N.N. Godoi was appointed in 1070 in a permanent vacancy caused by the resignation of Mrs. Roma Kargupta Sri Ramananda Bora and Mrs. Bandana Gogoi were inducted to the department in 1987 and 2003 respectively on the retirement of two aforesaid senior lecturers in the department. After imparting instruction to the students successfully for eight years, this section had to be closed in 2000 AD for its was not physically viable.

• To develop love and respect among the students for the rich cultural heritage of our country.
• To impart education through seminars and discussions to make our students competent to compete for higher administrative posts under State and Central Govt.
• To motivate the students through departmental excursion to places of historical importance to be interested in the study of history which will ultimately not only produce selfless servants to the society and the nation but also contribute to the development of Tourism Industry.
