The department of Economics was started from the very day the college started functioning i.e. from 7th Sept., 1060. In fact, the dream of acquiring knowledge of economics at that time came into reality when a subject viz. civic-a subject which combines Economics and Political Science was started in Intermediate classes. Later on, the subject was bifurcated in to Economics and Political Science.

The department was started with Khagendra Prasad Deka as the first lecturer of the department. Later on, Satish Kumar Sarmah joined the department in 1964. The department had been offering instructions in BA general course till 1978 when Premananda Borah joined the department and Major course was started. At present students of both science and arts faculties can pursue TDC Major and General courses in Economics.

GOAL

To transmit the knowledge of Economics to undergraduate students pursuing Economics both in General and Major courses, the department has taken innovative measures. Alongwith other social sciences as well as pure science subjects, the department takes academic steps with a view to promoting and spreading the knowledge of economics among the students for initiating and accelerating growth in the economics of the world and acquaint the students with the recent development in the subject.

Mission

The need of the hour is to develop human resources for the growth and development of the society. The aim of the department is to cooperate the society achieving its goal by imparting theoretical and practical teaching (viz., Socio-economics, surveys, seminars, workshops, etc.

  1. Conducting socio-economic projects that will help ameliorate the downtrodden of the society.
  2. Bringing to the department modern facilities such as latest information technology, journals, teaching aids, etc. so as to meet the challenge of the time
In addition to normal academic activities, the department engages ifself in the following activities

Departmental seminars on various economic topics are organized from time to time under the banner of ‘Economic Forum’ founded on 2001, besides UGC sponsored seminars.

A Wall-Magazine named ‘Economica’ is published with the help of student. Most of the teachers are active members of North-East Economic Association.
