After the establishment of Biswanath College in 1960 with the faculty of Arts, there still remained an increasing public demand for introducing science stream in the institution of higher learning. The demand was justified by the fact that there was no such institution catering to science education for th desiring students populace of the eastern part of the Bharali river of Tezpur Sub-Division of the then undivided Darrang district. Consequently, the college started the science faculty in 1970 with Pre-University course offering the combination of four science subjects, viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany + Zoology) and Mathematics. The science-section was formally inaugurated on November 28, 1970 by M.M. Choudhury, the then Honorably Chief Minister of Assam.

With the introduction of science faculty, the department of Chemistry came into existence, and Kshiradhar Baruah was appointed the Head of the department. Two-year B.Sc. course was started in the college from the session 1976-77 with an enrollment of 29 students having Chemistry as one of their subject of study. Honours course in chemistry was introduced in 1982-83. At present, students can pursue three-year Major (Honours) and General (Pass) courses in Chemistry.

Since its inception, the department has been producing to its credit a good number of graduates having Chemistry as the major and subsidiary subject. From among the alumni, a considerable number has been posted as school-teachers and college-lecturers in the various part of the state. A few have got the opportunity to get themselves employed in industries, banks, etc. and some, in stead of seeking employment elsewhere, have found their own way by self-employment in private business or the like.
